Password Manager Emergency Access Compared: Bitwarden vs 1Password vs Dashlane

Every major password manager has an emergency access feature. They work differently, cover different things, and have different limitations. Here's what each one actually gives your trusted contact — and what's still missing after you set it up.

If you use a password manager, you probably have 200+ passwords in it. Social media, banking, email, cloud storage, subscriptions — all locked behind one master password.

So the natural question is: if someone needs access to everything, can't they just get into my password manager?

The answer is yes — but only if you set it up ahead of time. And the setup is different for every manager. Here's how the three biggest password managers handle emergency access, what each one covers, and what's still missing.

Bitwarden: Emergency Access (Free)

Bitwarden's emergency access feature lets you designate trusted contacts who can request access to your vault. Here's how it works:

  1. You invite someone to be an emergency contact. They need a Bitwarden account (free is fine).
  2. They accept the invitation.
  3. You set a wait time: anywhere from immediate access to 90 days.
  4. If they request access, you get notified. If you don't deny the request within the wait period, they gain access to your vault.

The good: it's available on the free tier. No premium subscription required. The wait period is configurable. You can have multiple emergency contacts.

The limitation: Bitwarden gives access to passwords and notes in your vault. It does not give access to your 2FA codes (even if you use Bitwarden Authenticator), your master password, or any passkeys stored outside Bitwarden. And the access only happens if the trusted contact requests it — there's no automatic trigger.

What it covers: Passwords, secure notes, credit cards, identities stored in Bitwarden. What it doesn't: 2FA codes, device-specific authentication, the Bitwarden account recovery key.

What You Still Need to Do

Your emergency contact needs to know:

  • That Bitwarden exists on your phone/computer
  • Which email account is associated with it
  • How to request emergency access
  • That the 2FA on most of your accounts sits outside the Bitwarden vault

Bitwarden emergency access is a good first layer. It is not a complete plan.

1Password: Emergency Kit + Travel Mode

1Password doesn't have a "trusted contact request" model like Bitwarden. Instead, it uses the Emergency Kit:

The Emergency Kit is a PDF with your email address, secret key, and a space to write your master password. The idea: print it, fill in the master password by hand, store it somewhere secure (safe deposit box, locked drawer).

1Password also has family plans where a family organizer can recover a member's account. This is the closest thing to automatic access, but it requires a Family or Business plan.

What the Emergency Kit does: gives someone the keys to your vault. Complete access. All passwords, all notes, all 2FA codes stored in 1Password.

What it doesn't do: provide access to your 2FA codes that live outside 1Password. Or to services that don't use passwords at all (passkeys, device-based auth). Or tell your family that the kit exists, where it is, or how to use it.

What it covers: Everything in your 1Password vault — passwords, notes, 2FA codes stored in 1Password, documents. What it doesn't: Passkeys, platform-level 2FA that isn't stored in 1Password, biometric-locked accounts.

The Physical Vulnerability

The Emergency Kit has one big risk: it's paper. Paper can be lost, destroyed, or found by the wrong person. If someone finds your Emergency Kit with the master password filled in and your email address visible, they have your entire digital life.

This is a trade-off. The Emergency Kit is a complete access method — more complete than Bitwarden's time-delayed access — because it gives the full vault. But it requires physical security discipline.

Dashlane: Emergency Contact (Premium)

Dashlane's emergency access works similarly to Bitwarden's:

  1. You nominate an emergency contact. They need a Dashlane account.
  2. You set a wait time (24 hours minimum).
  3. Your contact requests access. You get notified via email.
  4. If you don't decline within the wait time, they get access to your vault — limited to the specific items you selected when you set up the feature.

The key difference from Bitwarden: you can choose which items to share. You might share banking passwords but not personal social media. Or share everything. The choice is per-category.

But: Emergency Contact requires Dashlane's Premium plan. The free tier doesn't include it.

What it covers: Passwords and notes you explicitly select. You control the scope. What it doesn't: 2FA codes, anything outside Dashlane. And the granular selection means you might forget to include something important.

The Common Gap Across All Three

Here's the thing none of them solve:

A password manager handles passwords. Most important accounts also have a 2FA layer (authenticator app, SMS, or passkey). Your emergency contact gets into your Bitwarden vault, finds your bank password, logs in — and hits a 2FA prompt. Now what?

The password manager gives them the key. The 2FA gives them a second locked door. Some password managers let you store TOTP seeds (1Password and Bitwarden do, Dashlane doesn't), which partially addresses this — your vault includes the 2FA codes. But passkeys, SMS-based 2FA tied to your phone number, and biometric verification on specific apps sit outside the vault, unreachable.

And none of the three emergency access features trigger automatically. They all require your contact to know the feature exists, find it, and initiate the request. If your contact doesn't know you have a password manager — or which one — the emergency access sits unused.

Which One Should You Pick for Inheritance?

If you're choosing a password manager specifically with digital inheritance in mind:

Bitwarden wins on cost and simplicity. 1Password wins on completeness (Emergency Kit gives full access, Family recovery is automatic). Dashlane wins on granular control.

But here's the honest answer: any of them is better than none. The difference between "my family has my password manager emergency access" and "my family has nothing" is massive. The difference between Bitwarden and 1Password for this purpose is smaller.

Three Things That Matter More Than Which Manager You Use

1. Your contact knows how to use it

A password manager emergency access link is useless if the person on the other end doesn't know what a password manager is. Walk them through it. Show them where the emergency access button is. Do a dry run if they're willing.

2. They know which accounts use which 2FA method

Your Bitwarden vault opens. Inside: bank password. Login attempt: 2FA code needed. Where does that code come from? Your phone? An authenticator app? A hardware key?

A 30-second note next to each critical account — "2FA via Google Authenticator on my phone" — can save hours of guessing.

3. There's something beyond the password manager

Passwords are one layer. 2FA is another. Passkeys are another. Device access is another. No single tool bridges them all. Your password manager emergency access is a great start. It's not the end.
