What Happens to Your Social Media Accounts When You're Not There
Every platform handles inactive accounts differently — memorial pages, deletion, locked logins. A clear breakdown of what Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Google, and Apple actually do when someone can't log in anymore.
Most people have 5+ social media accounts. Each one holds messages, photos, conversations, and connections that the people around you would want access to.
None of them will be able to log in.
Every platform handles this differently. Some let you designate someone ahead of time. Some require legal documents. One of the biggest platforms has exactly zero built-in tools for this. Here's what each one does — and what actually works.
Facebook has the most mature system in the industry. They call it Memorialization, and it's been around since 2015.
Two options, decided ahead of time:
Option 1: Memorialize the account. The profile stays up with "Remembering" displayed. Friends can post memories on the timeline. The account can't be logged into, and no one can read private messages. You name a Legacy Contact who can:
- Pin a tribute post at the top of the profile
- Respond to new friend requests
- Update the profile picture and cover photo
- Download an archive of what you shared publicly (posts, photos, videos)
- NOT read your messages. Private messages stay private.
Option 2: Delete the account. When Facebook learns you can't log in, they delete everything. This is an all-or-nothing choice you set once and it executes automatically.
To set it up: Settings → Memorialization Settings → choose Memorialize or Delete → name your Legacy Contact. Facebook sends them a notification. They don't need to accept — it's automatic.
If you didn't set anything: Anyone with proof can contact Facebook. They'll memorialize the account but won't give anyone access. Messages stay locked. Your profile becomes a static memorial that no one controls.
Instagram uses the same system as Facebook (same company) but with fewer options.
Memorialization: Same as Facebook — "Remembering" label, no login access, messages locked. Instagram allows immediate family to request memorialization by submitting proof. After memorialization, no one can log in or make changes.
Account removal: Immediate family with proof can request deletion instead. This doesn't require prior setup, but it requires documented proof that the account holder can't log in.
No Legacy Contact. Unlike Facebook, Instagram doesn't let you name someone to manage the account. Zero management options after memorialization. The profile just freezes.
To prepare: There's no proactive setup for Instagram specifically. Your Facebook Legacy Contact settings don't carry over to Instagram, even though Meta owns both. The only path is family-initiated after the fact, with documents.
X (Twitter)
Here's where it gets stark.
X has no built-in tool for this. None. There is no memorialization feature. No Legacy Contact. No account transition setting. No proactive option to set what happens.
The only path is for an authorized person to contact X support with:
- A government-issued ID
- A document verifying the account holder can't log in (legal document confirming next of kin status)
- The account's @handle
X reviews these on a case-by-case basis. The only option they offer is account deletion. The timeline, messages, and media can be downloaded only if you ask for an archive in the deletion request — and that's not guaranteed.
If nobody contacts X? The account stays up forever. Tweets stay visible. Messages sit unread. The profile just... sits there.
For anyone with a significant presence on X: This is worth planning around. If all your passwords are in iCloud Keychain, your X account is invisible to your family. They can't log in. They can't delete it. They can't even prove to X that you're not coming back without legal documents that most people don't keep in an easy-to-find place.
LinkedIn handles this through their standard account management.
Memorialization: LinkedIn can memorialize an account after being contacted with proof (name, relationship to the account holder, a link to the profile, and documentation). The profile shows "In Memory Of" and no further actions can be taken.
LinkedIn does also offer a proactive approach: anyone with the account holder's LinkedIn credentials can simply log in and close the account at any time — no additional verification is required.
Account closure by family: Family or colleagues can submit a request to close the account. LinkedIn verifies and removes the profile.
No advance setup. You can't name a contact ahead of time. The process is entirely reactive: someone has to notice, find the right help page, and submit a request with documentation.
Google's Inactive Account Manager is the gold standard for proactive setup. It covers Gmail, YouTube, Google Photos, Google Drive, and everything else tied to your Google account.
What you can set: After a period of inactivity you choose (3-18 months), Google will:
- Notify up to 10 trusted contacts
- Optionally share selected data with them (you pick which: Photos, Drive, Gmail, etc.)
- Optionally auto-delete the account
To set it up: Google Inactive Account Manager → pick your contacts → pick what to share → set your waiting period → save.

Google also periodically reminds you via email and phone notification that this setting is active. It's the most mature system of any platform.
Apple
Apple's Legacy Contact gives up to 5 people access to your iCloud data (photos, messages, notes, files). Covered step-by-step in our Apple Legacy Contact guide.
Key gap: iCloud Keychain (passwords) does not transfer. Your family can download your photos but can't log into your bank.

Three platforms let you plan ahead. Three don't. And none of them cover passwords, banking, crypto, domain registrars, or anything outside their own ecosystem.

Four Things to Do in the Next Hour
1. Set Facebook Memorialization. Settings → Memorialization Settings. Two minutes. Do it right now. Name someone. Decide memorialize or delete.
2. Set Google Inactive Account Manager. myaccount.google.com/inactive. Add your trusted contacts. Another three minutes.
3. Set Apple Legacy Contact. Settings → your name → Sign-In & Security → Legacy Contact. Covered in our step-by-step guide. Three minutes.
4. Write down where your passwords are. Apple won't hand over Keychain. Facebook won't let anyone read your messages. If your passwords only live in your head or in a locked Keychain, your family gets your photos but not your accounts. Write down one sentence: "My passwords are in [place]. The master password / 2FA backup is in [place]." Tell one person.
